Participants
This research project focused on my sixth period geometry class. The research benefited all of my students, but I focused my observations on 3 different students; advanced, average, and low performing. The research was conducted over a three-week period.
Materials
Students will have to have access to computers and the internet for some of the activities and all other materials were provided by me.
Procedure
There were three different ways that data was collected for the research project. The first was a survey of learning styles and experiences. The survey was given to each student at the beginning of the three-week period. The goal of the survey was for me to get a good understanding of what the students think and how they feel about learning, particularly math.
The second method for data collection was exit tickets. There were two different exit tickets for the class. One was designed for the advanced students and students who were doing well with the lesson. The second exit ticket had problems that were at grade level expectations and would be given to my lower performing students. In addition to two different problems based on the day’s lesson, there was question asking the students to rate the difficulty of the material covered and a place for students to write any additional questions or comments they had during the period. Exit tickets were checked on a daily basis and I used them to help guide the next day’s instruction.
The third type of data collection for this research project was student observations. A daily participation chart was completed for each of the three students that were chosen to be observed during the three-week period.
